FAQ

Q. What can I do about the banners at the top of your site?

A. The banners at the top and bottom of the site are put their by the host(s) for advertising. You can reduce the homepage banner considerably by using the the alternative homepage URL, which is located on a different sever. This smaller banner will appear only on the homepage (and on restored and/or new galleries located on the alternative host).

You can eliminate ALL banners by using the Firefox browser and installing three Greasemonkey scripts. First, install the Greasemonkey extension for Firefox. Then add new User Scripts, which you can download here. Click the download button at the left of the files screen. You will have to wait about 5 seconds while the server does an antivirus check. Then download the zip file and open the three scripts (text files). Using the greasemonkey extension, add each of the three scripts.

After installing the scripts, insert the following in the "included pages" for the first two user scripts: http://vintage*.sultryserver.com/*

Insert the following for the "included pages" for the third script: http://www.nobsxxxhost.com/members/*

Note: these scripts will take effect when the page is loaded, which may take a second or so.

Problems with Access to the Site

Q. Why do I sometimes have difficulty accessing the site, or some galleries?

A. Since this is a free site, I use free webhosting services, each of which has drawbacks. My previous main host server, bestpornhost.com, stopped functioning in early May 2006 for an unknown reason. I have gradually been moving all galleries to a new site, sultryserver.com. This new site sometimes refuses to accept a file for no clear reason. I don't know the upload has failed unless I test each and every link, a tedious process when I'm trying to restore almost 120,000 files. Once I know a link is bad, I can tweak the file (by renaming and/or resizing it) to restore the link.

Q. When I click on a thumbnail, I get redirected.

A. This means that a photo has not uploaded properly, or the server has rejected it (see above). Report the specific thumbnail to me and I'll fix it.

Q. You previously recommended that users outside the USA use an alternative URL to access the site. Is this still necessary?

A. It shouldn't be. I have moved all galleries off the server that was causing this problem.

Q. How can I access the site if the main homepage goes down?

A. I'll post any alternative link here in the Forum . The Forum is hosted on a completely separate server and should not be affected by what happens to the Vintage Stockings website. I recommend that you bookmark the Forum URL as well as the website.

Comments on the Site

Q. How can I make suggestions about the site?

A. You can post them on the Forum or Email them to me. Please post comments if you are having trouble accessing the site as that can help alert me to a problem. Also, let me know if a particular photo will not download. Often I can fix it.

The Collection

Q. When did you start this archive and why?

A. I had been collecting vintage and retro pictures from the internet for some time before starting several groups on Yahoo. After Yahoo eliminated general picture archiving I started my own website in December 2003.

Q. What do you consider vintage or retro photos?

A. Any pre-1980 pics are retro. I consider pre-1940 to be vintage, but some collectors think that vintage should be older than that. I will sometimes include pics from the 80s or later if they seem to fit the style.

Q. Why don't you post pics from sites like Blue Vanities or Raunchy Relics?

A. I don't like the logos. Also, I don't want to take pics from these commercial sites. I believe I have found most of them in original form anyway.

Q. Where do you find the pics posted on your site?

A. Mostly from the newsgroups, but also from other groups and collectors, as well as from visitors to my site.

Q. Why do you change the names?

A. For several reasons. One is that the host server host rejects some names or symbols, which means they have to be changed to be posted. More importantly, by using my own naming system I can recognize immediately a photo I've already collected, and keep my own collection straight.

Q. How did you choose the gallery categories?

A. At first, the only category was Vintage Stockings, a favorite of mine. I added the other galleries over time, often in response to suggestions from visitors to the site.

Q. Why are there duplicates in the galleries, and among categories?

A. As I started the site, I didn't think about duplicates until the collection grew fairly large. I used a duplicate finder program to eliminate exact (byte-for-byte) duplicates. However, it will not find duplicates where the file size differs, as is very often the case. (I myself have changed file sizes where necessary to comply with upload limits, generally under 250K.) Later, I began using a program called d'peg, which is pretty good at finding pattern matches, though not perfect. Now I check all new pics against the entire collection for file size matches and delete those that I find. I use d'peg to find pattern matches, but only within categories. To do so for the entire collection would overwhelm the capacity of the program. Even now to vet a new collection of 200 Vintage Stockings pics against the existing galleries in that category alone (1.5GB) takes approximately three hours of CPU processing time using d'peg. I allow for duplicates in different categories (e.g., Full-Cut Panties and Stockings and Big Boobs) because some visitors like to see all photos in their favorite categories.

Q. Do you plan any new categories?

A. I will consider new categories if users express sufficient interest. However, in most cases any photos out there have already been posted in another category. I am finding fewer and fewer new pics. In any case, many of the photos posted to any new category would necessarily be duplicates of pics already posted somewhere. I am willing to do this if users would like to see their particular subcategories collected.

Q. Why don't you collect and post pictures by model, like Jackie Miller, et. al.?

A. I am not a serious collector, who would do just that. I collect according to the categories I enjoy to share with others. The value of the collection, as I see it, is the categorization. It is not a model collection. The only exception is the Abi collection, which is as complete as I can make it, and for the most part retains original names.

Q. I have noticed quite a few pictures posted which appear contemporary, not retro or vintage, and all without faces. What are these?

A. They are being sent to me people who asked to put them on my site. I've done so because I like the photos, because they generally fit my theme, and because they are unique to my site.

Abi

Q. Why do you include Abi, who is not vintage?

A. I love her pics and collect them all. They date from approximately the late 70s or early 80s to 2006. Abi is a true amateur, sensuous like the women of earlier eras. Her pics cover many of the categories covered on my site, including full-cut panties, which are fairly rare. Other collectors encouraged me to post the entire collection. I believe itis the most comprehensive posted anywhere.

Q. Does Abi know you post her pics?

A. Yes. She and her husband have sent me pics to post. Abi retired from posing in 2006.

Contributing Photos

Q. How can I contribute pics to your site?

A. You can e-mail me any pics you think appropriate. I will post them if they fit any of the categories, and if they are new. I will screen them against my collection to determine whether they have already been posted. I will not knowlingly post copyrighted or commercially logoed photos.

Q. What size and format can I send you?

A. Any size or format is OK. I may have to reduce them in size for posting. Q, I would like to contribute pics of my wife/girlfriend, though they are not necessarily retro. Will you consider that? A. Yes, in some cases. The collection has to be genuine, large enough to form galleries of 200 pics each, and generally be consistent with the theme of the site. E-mail me if you wish to do this.
